How an overseas couple can get their marriage certificate in Perth when they get married in Australia
If you are an overseas couple and coming to Perth, Australia and wondering about your documents after the wedding here is some useful information for you:
At your Perth Wedding, the Wedding Celebrant will give you a nice presentation copy of the Marriage Certificate. This is not the official marriage Certificate and you will have to apply to the Registry of Births deaths and marriages in the registering state to get the official marriage certificate. How do you do that? Then keep reading….
After the wedding ceremony in Perth, the Wedding Celebrant will send send the paperwork to the Perth office of Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages and they will register your marriage within about 5-10 working days (depends on their workload).
If you need the Official certificate you can apply for it from BDM or a local WA courthouse (check with the courthouse if they offer this) with the application form I give you after the wedding.
This is the document you will use to prove you are married/change your name with the various authorities.
You will have to show them the correct ID so please read the form carefully to what ID to have and if the application form is posted in your copies need to be certified. The list of those who can certify your documents are on page 3 on the form and they can be any of these people in any country around the world (not just in Australia). So you can have them certified before you come to Australia to be married.
Another useful article that I have written that may be useful in explaining some of the process in regards to Changing your name.
